In 1975, Dr. Bob Hieronimus was contracted to design a mural depicting the Lexington Market’s impending 200 year history and notable patrons who dined there throughout history. The market is one of the oldest public markets in the United States and a staple in Baltimore City, having been open since 1782.

The work won him critical acclaim as “one of this country’s best muralists.” Building renovations in 1984 required that a new mural be created. That year, Hieronimus completed the final version, E Pluribus Unum, with additional themes added related to the city’s historical legacy and possible mystical connections to Atlantis.

The Lexington Market Mural contains themes, color symbolism, and esoteric references that weave through Hieronimus’s long art career. This guide is especially helpful for those interested in the regional significance of Hieronimus’s birthplace of Baltimore and its potential as a spiritual epicenter.
